Media Release: Football BC provincial teams set to compete at the High Roller Football Showdown in Las Vegas

Football BC will be fielding three teams at the 2016 High Roller Football Showdown in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 21 to 23, 2016.

Football BC’s Grade 8, U16 and U18 teams will be competing against all-star American teams with players representing Kansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Texas, Utah, Arkansas, Nevada, as well as Puerto Rico at the event hosted by World Wide Athletics.

Grade 8 Team Roster

Grade 8 Team BC and U16 Team BC will each play two games at the event beginning on Friday, January 22. Grade 8 Team BC will face Team Vegas U14, while U16 Team BC will face Team Vegas U16 on the opening day. The tournament continues the following day with the winners advancing to the championship round, and the losers playing in a consolation final. Friday’s games will occur at the All American Park (1551 S. Buffalo Dr., Las Vegas, NV 89117) while Saturday’s games will take place at Clark High School (4291 W. Pennwood Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89102).

U18 Team BC players will be taking part in the “Big Nasty” skills competition on Friday evening before competing on Saturday, January 23 against Team Vegas USA Varsity. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 pm at Clark High School.

U18 Team BC is guided by Jay Prepchuk, currently the head coach of BC High School Football’s Handsworth Royals. Prepchuk was a record-setting quarterback at Simon Fraser University from 1979 to 1982, and is a former head coach of the UBC Thunderbirds.

U16 Team BC is led by Peter McCall, currently the head coach of BC High School Football’s Rutland Voodoos. McCall is a former Scholastic Coach of the Year award winner and was the defensive backs coach of the 2000 CJFL national champion Okanagan Sun, as well as head coach of the Sun from 2009 to 2010 compiling a 15-5 regular season record while earning CJFL Coach of the Year honours in 2010.

Grade 8 Team BC is helmed by two-time CJFL Coach of the Year Nick Kawaza, who currently the BCFC’s coaching coordinator. Kawaza is best known for his work with the BCFC’s Surrey Rams organization spending seven years with their juvenile program winning a provincial championship, and another 14 years with their junior program winning four provincial titles and a Western Canadian championship.

Team BC’s coaching staffs also feature several prominent current and former Grey Cup championship players including Jerome Erdman, Will Loftus, Angus Reid, and Paris Jackson, as well as the reigning CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player, Adam Bighill.

Saturday, January 23

9:30 am – U14 (Grade 8) consolation game
12 pm – U16 consolation game
2:30 pm – U14 championship game
5 pm – U16 championship game
7:30 pm – Team BC U18 vs Team Vegas USA Varsity
